    1937 / Turmoil in the Arts

    In 1937, Nazi officials purged German museums of works the party considered to be degenerate. That same year, General Francisco Franco bombed the town of Guernica, killing hundreds of innocent civilians. In protest, Pablo Picasso painted Guernica, first exhibited in Paris at the 1937 International Exposition dedicated to Art and Technology in Modern Life.
