Gustav Klimt was one of the most talented Austrian artists, mixing symbolism and art nouveaux to create a visual language that would help free Austrian Art from the conservative grip of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During his life time, his work was constantly criticized for being too sensual and erotic, and his symbolism too deviant for conservative taste.
